How to be successful at SIDES online learning
At SIDES you will be learning in an online format. This is different from learning in a classroom at a brick and mortar school (like your local neighbourhood school). There are some skills and work habits that you will need to develop to be successful at SIDES.
These skills and work habits include:
- Consistently submit completed work that shows you understand what you just learned and that is done to the best of your ability.
- Make strong progress in your courses through use of the course scheduler. If you cannot find the scheduler in your course, contact your teacher.
- You will want to create a timetable for your classes. Choose specific times when you will work on each subject and then stick to the timetable. This will help you get into a routine.
- Plan ahead and consider any holidays that may be coming up when staff will not be able to answer your questions.
- Take responsibility for your learning by figuring out what you know and what you don’t. Then, reach out to your teachers for what you need help with so you can keep moving forward in your courses with confidence.
- Communicate clearly and consistently with your teachers.
For example, Sara is a current student in one of our courses. She always reads the feedback her teacher leaves for her in the assignments and quizzes and she corrects these errors in her future assignments. This enables her make good progress in the course as she is continuously submitting her best work to the assignments section. She also familiarizes herself with the hours and schedule at SIDES and knows that she needs to allow for 2 business days for test and transcript requests to be processed. She also plans around scheduled closures (Christmas and Spring Break). Sara works independently and takes responsibility for speaking with her teacher when she has questions or needs help on an assignment. She also clearly labels her name, date, course and assignment on all of her work.
In taking these actions, Sara has demonstrated growth and learning, planning ahead, communicating clearly and respectfully and that she takes responsibility for her learning (see highlighted areas above). This has led to success in her courses at SIDES
