Technology
Create separate folders for each course you are taking which has subfolders for each unit of the course.
You will need have a desktop or laptop computer and high speed internet. A phone or tablet will not work for the purposes of completing your courses.
Be sure you have a way to save your information so you don't loose it such as Google Drive or a hard drive on your computer.
Do not cut and paste from websites – you need to give credit where credit is due. If you don't, this is plagiarism. You need to read information and then put it in your own words.
Tips for Online Studies:
- Be organized. Set up a weekly schedule and time to study. Using the course scheduler will make it easier to finish your courses in a timely manner.
- Set goals for completion of your courses. Put "due date" reminders in your calendar so that you stay on track for finishing your courses. Again, the course scheduler can help you come up with the due dates for your assignments and tests.
- Have a study area that is outside of the bedroom and away from distractions.
- Make a list of outcomes to complete during the study session – a "to do list". The course scheduler can help with this as well. It can be very motivating and satisfying to cross off assignments on your list.
- Motivation comes after starting, not before, so sit down and begin doing one small thing. Your momentum can build from there.
- Take breaks regularly, and when needed, away from the computer ie.) move around, stretch or go outside.
- Remind yourself why you are doing the course. How does it support your goals? Maybe it is just to graduate for right now or you have plans for post-secondary education. Is an online course a good fit for me at this time?
- If you have any questions, be sure to communicate with your teacher for the course. Reaching out to your teacher with questions and comments help to keep you engaged with the course material.
- Join a study group or find a place to study that helps to motivate you.
- Find balance between school and other areas of interest in your life.
- Keep a regular sleep schedule, eat healthy snacks and limit caffeinated beverages. Water is the best thing for your brain.
