Description

Fashion Industry 12 fully meets the learning outcomes for the redesigned BC Curriculum as well as for the Applied Skills requirement for Graduation. The focus of this course is for students to gain an understanding of the fashion industry by exploring the historical, social and cultural influences of fashion design. Students will explore the elements and principles of design as well as the social and environmental impacts and considerations of a design life cycle. Marketing and merchandising strategies will be presented and students will have the opportunity to explore future career opportunities in the fashion industry as well as completing a final design project. Students are not required to have textiles experience or access to a sewing machine to complete this course.

Fashion Industry 12 is organized into five units:

  • Unit 1: Foundations of Fashion Design - explore factors involved in fashion design, elements and principles of design, and the many uses of fashion in society.
  • Unit 2: Fashion History, Cultural Influences and Legal Considerations - examine the history of fashion and historical influences on fashion, social and cultural influences on clothing design and choices, and legal considerations related to the fashion industry.
  • Unit 3: Materials, Sustainability, and Supply Chain - consider the properties of fibres and fabrics, design for the life cycle, global and local supply chains, and ethical and environmental considerations in the production and marketing of fashion.
  • Unit 4: Marketing, Career Exploration, and Technology - investigate marketing and merchandising strategies, future career options in the fashion industry, and interpersonal and consultation skills.
  • Unit 5: Final Design Project - follow the design process and complete a final project for the course of the student’s choosing

  • Design for the life cycle includes consideration of social and environmental impacts.
  • Personal design interests require the evaluation and refinement of skills.
  • Tools and technologies can be adapted for specific purposes.

Curricular Competencies

There are three broad sets of curricular competencies for this course:

Applied Design - these are the competencies connected to understanding context, defining, ideating, prototyping, testing, making, and sharing.

Applied Skills - these are the competencies connected to applying safety procedures in both physical and digital environments, and identifying and evaluating skills needed for design.

Applied Technology- these are the competencies connected to exploring technologies and systems to evaluate suitability for design, analyzing the role of technologies play in societal change and how cultural beliefs and values affect the use of technologies on a global level.

Delivery

Student-paced. Students are expected to submit work regularly and to complete the course within one calendar year.

Summary

Students submit all assignments electronically.

Assessment

Assessment is the systematic gathering of information about what students know, understand, and are able to do in relation to the curricular competencies and content for this course. Here are the key ways you will be assessed:

  • "Formative" submissions on which descriptive feedback is given and no grade.
  • Polished submissions in a variety of forms.
  • Self-assessment about student learning and growth conducted through phone, electronic, or in person interviews.
  • Final project.

A final mark will be based on the student’s body of work as a whole, taking into consideration both supervised and unsupervised assessments.

Students are supported by the online teacher for the course, and can receive assistance by email, phone or Zoom.

Materials

Students need access to a computer and high speed internet. A web camera is required for video submissions.
