Description
Social Studies 9 is an online, media-rich course designed to meet the new BC Social Studies 9 Curriculum (2016).

The course offers interactive lessons, a variety of guided activities and assignments, and rubric-based assessment.
Socials 9 revolves around four big ideas:
1. Emerging ideas and ideologies profoundly influence societies and events.
2. The physical environment influences the nature of political, social and economic change.
3. Disparities in power alter the balance of relationships between individuals and between societies.
4. Collective identity is constructed over time.
This course has been divided into the following units of study:
Unit 1: Canada’s First Peoples: Contact and Colonization
Unit 2: Canadian Immigration
Unit 3: Canada: The Creation of a Nation
Unit 4: Independent Inquiry Project
Because inquiry is such a key part of the new curriculum, students are introduced to and practice these skills throughout the first three units and complete an independent inquiry project in Unit 4.

Delivery
Social Studies 9 is a self-paced course and students can begin throughout the year. Students are expected to finish their course within a one-year period.
Assessment
Students are assessed on a variety of assignments in each unit, including charts, discussion posts, quizzes and other activities. There is an independent inquiry project in Unit 4. Assignments are submitted electronically through the course dropbox to ensure prompt feedback. Most assessments are rubric-based.
There is a supervised midterm and a final exam in the course.
